Day 1: San Jose
Upon your arrival in San Jose, Costa Rica and after clearing customs and immigration, exit the airport terminal to meet our local representative, for your transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Tortuguero (BLD)
You will be picked up early in the morning at your hotel for your guided tour of Tortuguero National Park. Your travel route will pass through the majestic forested mountain wilderness of Braulio Carillo National Park just outside of San José, and then you will descend to the lowland plains stopping for a typical breakfast en route. In the lowlands you will pass through banana plantations before boarding a boat for a river journey through farmlands and majestic forests and on to Tortuguero. Arriving at your hotel you can relax to admire the scenery around you, or visit the small local town, walk the beach, or see exhibits in the excellent natural history museum.
Day 3: Tortuguero National Park (BLD)
A premier area for wildlife viewing, the vast forested wilderness of Tortuguero is accessible only by plane or by boat along a vast river network and remote-yet your hotel is first class! Today, you will have a morning guided walk through the pathways around the hotel, free time for exploring or relaxing, and then enjoy an afternoon boat tour to Tortuguero National Park. Your eagle-eyed boat driver and guide will point out wildlife that includes shorebirds, monkeys, caiman, toucans, parrots, iguanas, sloths and more! During July to September, sea turtles come ashore to nest on the beach at night, and guided tours to observe this ancient ritual can be arranged.
Day 4: La Paz Waterfall Gardens & Arenal Volcano (BL)
From Tortuguero, you will take a scenic 45 minute return flight back to San José passing over rainforests, banana plantations and mountains. You will be picked up at the local airport for your guided tour in the Arenal Volcano area stopping first at La Paz Waterfall Gardens. La Paz has manicured gardens; a rescued wildlife preserve with jungle cats and monkeys; a hummingbird garden; live butterfly, frog exhibits and more. At La Paz you can walk along a clear mountain river on an easy access trail with great views of gorgeous waterfalls. After a delicious lunch at La Paz, you will continue your journey into lowland plains amid tropical farmlands before arriving at your Arenal hotel.
Day 5: Arenal Observatory Lodge Trails & Lake Crossing transfer to Monteverde (B)
" Arenal Observatory Lodge is the only lodge situated within Arenal National Park, where more than 15 miles of private trails through tropical foothill rainforest await. On a nature hike this morning you will explore the trails in search of wildlife, enjoying views of the volcano along the way. This region hosts an amazing 400 bird species, including an incredible diversity of hummingbirds. There are opportunities to encounter spider monkeys, howler monkeys, coatis, and peccaries.
In the afternoon you will be picked up for the lake crossing to Monteverde. Your boat ride across Lake Arenal will connect you with a land transfer to your hotel in Monteverde.
The Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the worlds premiere destinations for naturalists. Much of the resident wildlife is unique to these habitats. In addition to forest hikes, visitors can enjoy many other attractions including horseback riding; dining in numerous restaurants; live frog and butterfly exhibits; bird watching; crafts and gift shopping; zip line tours and bridge walks in forest canopies; a visit to a native orchid garden and more.
Day 6: Zip line Canopy Tour & Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve (B)
For some morning adrenaline, fly through the rainforest on a Zip Line Canopy Tour. All the adventurous activities happen under the expert watch and assistance of guides. Let the magical opulence of the Costa Rican rain forests seep into your consciousness while you travel from one zip-line platform to another. In the early afternoon, you will visit the world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Hike the reserve on well-groomed trails with your expert naturalist guide. It is very possible to see the resplendent Quetzal, which spends about half the year in Monteverde feeding and breeding. As a prime example of cloud forest ecosystems, Monteverde has been intensely studied by scientists and is the site for pioneering research on the effects of climate change on tropical ecosystems.
Day 7: Shuttle to San José (B)
Shuttle transfer to the capital city of San José
Day 8: Departure(B)
You will be picked up at your hotel for a transfer to the International Juan Santamaria Airport in San Jose. Check in must be at least 3 hours prior to the departure time.
